The United Methodist Church

John WesleyBetween 1735 and 1738, Rev. John Wesley (1703-1791), the founder of the Methodist church, spent time in Savannah, Georgia, as a chaplain to the colony of Georgia. He hoped to convert the Indians and to save his own soul. (World Book Encyclopedia) He preached at what is now Christ Episcopal Church, one of the most historic churches in the city. After leaving Savannah, he returned to London where he had his Aldersgate experience, finding his "heart was strangely warmed" as he listened to a reading of Martin Luther's preface to the Epistle to the Romans, one of the books of the New Testament.

Rev. Wesley and his brother, Rev. Charles Wesley, were prolific writers of hymns (over 9000) which are used in many Christian churches today. One of the most loved is "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing." The United Methodist Church has a site with the music from the United Methodist Hymnal.
